A lean and unique model
maximizing positive impact for nature.

How we operate

We focus on a simple and forward-thinking process. We restore entire ecosystems and ensure the highest quality through every step of the value chain. Our models are custom-made for impact-oriented investors and/or corporates.

Using a geo dataset analysis, we focus on areas with high restoration potential and low risk and undergo a 3-step due diligence process for the selection of idle land plots based on a multi-criteria analysis of 17 variables).

Our first target locations include Colombia as it offers a great reforestation potential, rapid tree growth, and the most dense biodiversity per hectare. With roughly 10M hectares of unproductive land identified, our land acquisition is highly scalable.

Leveraging the expertise of our local team Colombia, we take a multitude of social, governmental, ecological, legal and other country-specific factors into consideration to identify secure, high-quality pieces of land suitable for restoration, and assisted natural regeneration in particular.

We simply take away what keeps nature from restoring itself, as invasive species, chemicals, cattle ranching, and let nature do most of the work. We can add soft interventions, to help the natural regeneration of native forests: fire protection, fencing, rewilding, bird nudging with vegetative perches.

ANR is one of the most efficient natural climate solutions (NCS) to mitigate climate change and restore biodiversity. It allows for scalable projects, as with light-touch interventions, we can aim for much larger and remote areas to be restored quicker. The multilayered vegetative cover supports the full ecosystem recovery, versus a typical reforestation that involves the planting of a limited number of species. This diversity created enhances resilience, habitat quality for local wildlife and environmental stability. Our ANR design is done through a strata analysis and a technical mapping.

After an initial project assessment, validation and verification, our projects are monitored on a regular basis to ensure transparency and traceability.

Between our Colombian team, our European team and our partners, NatureRe has extensive nature-restoration and carbon expertise. On-site, the work is performed by our rangers, our land managers, and our local expert partners. Off-site, we have ensured an effective admin set-up (tax, legal, bookkeeping).

We monitor carbon by regularly contrasting randomly sampled permanent plots of land with satellite data and peer reviewed AGB databases. We also monitor biodiversity. We detect fauna through camera traps, analyse water for macro-invertebrates and analyse flora in sampling plots in collaboration with local universities.

Our carbon potential calculations are done using a local data sources (Yepes, et al., 2010) for natural regeneration and MAI for active restoration. We certify projects to the highest standards (Verra and Gold Standard), laying the foundation to turn our greenhouse gas emission removals into tradable high-quality carbon credits on the voluntary carbon market. In addition to the GHG-crediting program (VCS), we will verify our projects through further programs (CCBS), validating the positive impact on climate change mitigation, biodiversity and local communities.

Once the carbon credits are emitted, we either sell them to our corporate clients or the revenues from credit sale is transferred to our investors.

As part of our project registration with Verra, we will ensure the permanence of our land restoration. By buying our land we are able to monitor what happens on-site. Using Assisted Natural Regeneration to restore this land allows for a low-intervention project. We also installed GFW forest fire detection and alerts to minimize risks.

We intend to protect these areas on the long term by making them into natural reserves after our project is completed (20 to 30 years depending on the project). We are in the process of starting the registration of our lands as “natural reserves” within ResNatur (Association Red Colombiana de reservas naturales de la sociedad civil). With this registration, we can reassure the local communities that the land will be restored “forever” and that sanctuaries are created.

Impact investing in Natural-based Solution

The world is facing two environmental crises – a climate crisis and a biodiversity crisis – which are inextricably linked. NBS, such as Assisted Natural Regeneration, not only help to tackle both but also increase resilience as the climate changes. They are effective and scalable ways of leveraging the power of nature and emulating natural processes within an ecosystem.

85% of companies have a great dependency to nature. Companies will have to address nature loss as a business risk mitigation. NatureRe helps to bridge the gap from commitment to actions.

Assisted Natural Regeneration

Assisted natural regeneration (ANR) takes advantage of natural regrowth processes which ensures that the established plant community is well adapted to the site conditions and has high durability. ANR starts by removing what stops nature from restoring itself, including invasive species, chemicals, cattle ranching, and let nature do most of the work. We then add soft interventions to help the natural regeneration of native forests: seed bombs, fire protection, fencing, re-wilding… ANR results in a more diverse, multilayered vegetative cover than from typical reforestation involving the planting of a limited number of species. This diversity enhances habitat quality for local wildlife and environmental stability.
