A lean and unique model
maximizing positive impact for nature.
How we operate
We focus on a simple and forward-thinking process. We restore entire ecosystems and ensure the highest quality through every step of the value chain. Our models are custom-made for impact-oriented investors and/or corporates.
Using a geo dataset analysis, we focus on areas with high restoration potential and low risk and undergo a 3-step due diligence process for the selection of idle land plots based on a multi-criteria analysis of 17 variables.
Our first target locations include Colombia as it offers a great reforestation potential, rapid tree growth, and the most dense biodiversity per hectare. With roughly 10M hectares of unproductive land identified, our land acquisition is highly scalable.
Leveraging the expertise of our local team Colombia, we take a multitude of social, governmental, ecological, legal and other country-specific factors into consideration to identify secure, high-quality pieces of land suitable for restoration, and assisted natural regeneration in particular.
We simply take away what keeps nature from restoring itself, as invasive species, chemicals, cattle ranching, and let nature do most of the work. We then add soft interventions, to help the natural regeneration of native forests: fencing, fire protection, and replanting of local native species.
ANR is one of the most efficient natural climate solutions (NCS) to mitigate climate change and restore biodiversity. It allows for scalable projects, as with light-touch interventions, we can aim for much larger and remote areas to be restored quicker. The multilayered vegetative cover supports the full ecosystem recovery, versus a typical reforestation that involves the planting of a limited number of species. This diversity created enhances resilience, habitat quality for local wildlife and environmental stability. Our ANR design is done through a strata analysis and a technical mapping.
After an initial project assessment, validation and verification, our projects are monitored on a regular basis to ensure transparency and traceability.
Between our Colombian team, our European team and our partners, NatureRe has extensive nature-restoration and carbon expertise. On-site, the restoration implementation and monitoring work is performed by our rangers and forest engineers, and supported by our local expert partners. Off-site, our head of nature restoration plans our implementation and supervises the on-site work, and our carbon expert oversees the carbon monitoring.
We monitor carbon through measurements made on randomly sampled plots. This data collection takes place every two years (with the first having been done in November 2024), as a way of supporting carbon accounting and guiding our adaptive management approach to Assisted Natural Regeneration. Going forward we will be comparing these results with satellite data. We also monitor biodiversity: we detect fauna through camera traps, analyse water for macro-invertebrates and analyse flora in sampling plots in collaboration with local universities.
Our carbon potential calculations are done using a local data sources (Yepes, et al., 2010) for natural regeneration and MAI for active restoration. We certify projects to the highest standards (Verra), laying the foundation to turn our greenhouse gas emission removals into tradable high-quality carbon credits on the voluntary carbon market. In addition to the GHG-crediting program (VCS), we will verify our projects through further programs (CCBS), validating the positive impact on climate change mitigation, biodiversity and local communities.
Once the carbon credits are emitted, we either sell them to our corporate clients or the revenues from credit sale is transferred to our investors.
Our team ensures the project’s permanence. We have hired forest rangers, who are trained for forest fires, to verify and control planned activities. The restoration team supports the supervision and implementation of project activities and is responsible for stakeholder relationship management and promoting the permanence and technical evaluation to ensure medium/long-term project management. Our methodology also increase project permanence. Assisted Natural Regeneration allows for the restoration of native and resilient forests, more robust in the face of potential disease or fires.
We ensure restoration permanence beyond the project’s duration by purchasing the land we are restoring and registering them as “natural reserves” within ResNatur (Association Red Colombiana de reservas naturales de la sociedad civil). With this registration, we can guarantee that the land will not be degraded once the project ends.
Our projects go beyond carbon capture
We capture CO₂
We boost biodiversity
We support local communities
Driving every step - our ESG commitments
We drive positive climate impact through CO2 absorption. Our first project aims to capture more than +1.0M tCO2 eq in 15 years. We boost biodiversity through the regeneration of ecosystems, rebirth of wild animal and plant species, enrichment of soil and water qualities. We aim for the highest international certification standards with VCS and CCBS.
We respect local owners, local laws, ethnic groups and living wages, in line with the UN human rights. We develop long-lasting relationships with local communities. We promote gender equality both in our projects as well as with NatureRe – our board is made up on 50% women and nearly 40% in our core team. We set up individual social programs depending on local needs.
We set high ethical standards. We follow anti-bribery and corruption standards, with a transparent model of governance and decision-making processes.
